So, one of my favorite cartoons, which has always been funny while remaining intelligent and has managed a feat most cartoons these days find insurmountable--appealing to all age ranges--is being butchered by producers and executives in Hollywood.
The live-action movie for the cartoon, Avatar, the Last Airbender, which is set in a fantasy world stylized after Asian culture, values, and various Asian peoples has been cast with an all-white cast including Jesse McCartney as the lead antagonist, Prince Zuko.
The creators of the show had created a beautiful fantasy world that drew heavily, if not always exclusively, from Asian cultures, mythologies, and legends. It extensively borrows from Asian art, mythologies, martial arts, and religions including Hinduism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Confuscianism. The creators so explicitly crafted their fantasy world after Far East that they even hired cultural consultants to ensure the quality and accuracy of their scripts.
What's more, very few characters can be said to be anything even remotely resembling caucasian. In fact, most of the script used throughout the show are traditional styles of East Asian calligraphy.
And yet, Hollywood has decided that there are either no good Asian actors currently in the field or that it's entirely acceptable to white-wash a film entirely dedicated to the influences and nuances of Asian cultures. Sadly, the director and executives seemed to have utterly missed the central message of racial tolerance and human rights that this cartoon typified by one of the main driving plots of the show: one nation throws the entire world out of balance by oppressing all the others and even launching a successful genocide against the entire race of the main protagonist, Aang.
Here's a link to a few screen-captures depicting the major characters, supporting characters, and the fantasy world in which Avatar has been set Avatar Captures.
Hollywhite is so dumb.
